“Kinki Boutique Award Nominations 2012″
First they had to submit a picture of their work, then after being short listed they had to recreate the Image on their model at the final heats.
Leading experts in the British Hairdressing industry met on 8th August 2012 to judge the entries for the second Great Lengths Awards at the exclusive private members club, Home House, London.
It was an intense day, covering all nine categories in the awards, causing much debate amongst the judges to come up with the shortlist of finalists.
Here’s what they had to say about the day:
“I would like to thank all of the stylists and salon owners who took part in this year’s awards. Obviously we can only have a selected number of finalists and winners but I urge you all to keep trying as you could be our next Great Lengths Extensionist of the Year.” Phillip Sharp.

Jason, Caroline and Chelsey from Kinki Boutique have been nominated in this years Loreal Colour Trophy Award Finals 2013.
Jason says” Chelsey and myself have been nominated on several occasions before and have also won the Young Colourist award on two occasions but its always great to know that your work is being judged at such a high standard by our hairdressing industry peers”.
For Caroline its her first nomination and bearing in mind she has only been at Kinki Boutique for a year, shes outshining many others staff that have past through our doors.
Jason Says”I find it rewarding and a good exercise to put your work where your mouth is as such to prove that you have what it takes and that our salon has its finger on the pulse of whats hot or not”.

Emily
Emily is from Australia’s Sunshine Coast but has been working at Headmasters in London until she moved to us working as a Creative Stylist. Shes fun and down to earth with a fresh Ozzy outlook on life. Her boyfriend lives in Norwich so its becoming a second home to her although she does like to visit London as much as possible spending time with her friends there too.

Kinki would like to welcom back Nick Raffe! Our ex Salon Manager returns to us on Thur 14Th March 2013. He will be taking the position as Creative Director in both Cutting and Colouring. Nick will be working Thur, Fri and Sats every week. His career has seen him manage several Toni&Guy Salon both in London and beyond. He spends his time attending high profile clients in London, Newmarket and in North Norfolk when he is not out walking his dog along the coastline or spending time on his love of painting. On 28th February Kinki Boutique celebrated our 5th birthday. We shared cupcakes, champagne and chocolates with our loyal clients and friends. We also had 150 balloons dotted around and outside of the salon. Many thanks to everybody that has supported us over the last 5 years. Kinki Boutique styled all of the hair, and cut the hair of some of the contestants in this years UK Regional Final Heat which forms part of the original and prestigious Miss World Competition.
Jason was also asked to be a judge alongside the reining Miss England, Miss Europe, Miss World Swimwear, Miss Scotland and two other former Miss England Winners.
Obviously he didn’t mind one bit!

In 2005 M.T.V. started a campaign called “stayin-alive.org” to warn teenagers against the dangers of unprotected sex.
Having been asked for our support for a recent shoot Kinki Boutique were only too glad to lend our time (unpaid) for such a worth while charity and cause.

Hair and Styling for Dhana’s first solo music video by Jason & the team from Kinki Boutique.
Dhana travelled all the way from L.A. so she could work with her previous video director and Kinki Boutique again.
An accomplished songwriter, Dhana’s voice and music has been heard in various films like “Firewall” ( Harrison Ford) and “John Tucker Must Die,” and TV shows such as “The Hills,” “90210,” “The Good Wife” and “CSI: NY,” as well as in national and international commercials.
We came up with the idea of using lightweight black silk fabric along with a high powered fan to create an unusual background and sometimes foreground to the video. The idea coming loosely from an advert directed by Nick Knight with Charlize Theron for J’Adore Dior in which she was seen laying naked under an undulating gold silk fabric.
An almost 24 hour video shoot, shot on location in the streets and on the roof tops of L.A.
Its a hard life!

Taxi Doll has shared the stage with a very diverse range of acts such as Katy Perry, The Prodigy, Shiny Toy Guns, Boomkat, Berlin, & Bitter Sweet as well as headlining shows around the U.S.
Universal got behind Taxi Doll and their single “Waiting,” which climbed all the way to number 3. on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay Charts U.S.A. and number 1. in Music Week (Europe).
This collection of images were the only ones that we have ever used professional models in, choosing to use our own clients and in-house amateur models from our team training sessions instead. Our motto of Real People, Real Hair! lends itself not only to our photographic work but to our daily salon work too..
Betty Curse Music Video. Styling and Hair by Kinki Boutique.
At age the age of 11 Megan Burns grandmother sent her to a drama class. From there she received a part in the film Liam (2000). She won the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance. Danny Boyle saw this and cast her in his film 28 Days Later, where she played Hannah, one of the survivors of a deadly epidemic. Megan Burns has since worked as a singer under the pseudonym Betty Curse, which was chosen by her record company Island Records.

Check out the set design in the background. It took hours to create, adding fake cobwebs to the real cobwebs that were already in the loft space that we were using. Old furniture and ordainments bought from junk shops, dead plants, projectors, a smoke machine, torch and a bible gave the old Hammer House or Rosemary’s Baby cinema effect that we wanted to achieve. Kinki styled the hair (and lent the location!) for the cast in the video shoot for Finnish rockband, HIM & Ville Valo. Jason also provided the set design.
HIM are a Finnish rock band from Helsinki. Formed in 1991 they have released seven full-length albums to date, the latest, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, released on February 8, 2010. HIM’s fifth album Dark Light went gold in the U.S. making HIM the first Finnish band to have a gold album in the United States. HIM have had platinum albums in Finland with Razorblade Romance being certified double platinum there and platinum in Germany.

Hair cut and Styled by Jason Taylor.
The Sunshine Underground sold out venues in London and Leeds on their first headline tour. Following their successful support slots for L.C.D. Sound System, the group earned the Live Band of the Year trophy at the Leeds Music Awards.
These archive pictures were taken in Prague over Xmas 2004/05.
The models were more interesting than beautiful but were open for a big change which made the shoot fun. The name Metamorphosis comes from one of my favourite short stories by Franz Kafka who was born in Prague and lived between 1883 – 1924. Kafka’s original story was the inspiration for the Motion picture the Fly.
One of these pictures won the Loreal Young Colourist Award for a company that i was working with at the time.
This was the first Music Video Shoot that Kinki Boutique got involved in. Not only doing the hair and makeup, cutting and styling but we also came up with the lighting effects, having been inspired by an early David Bowie (Heroes) music video and The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb animation. This picture was taken during a Gorilla Gig in our current premises before work started on our 8 month shop fit. As you can see the shop needed a little bit of work doing to it.

Why Kinki?
Kinki is a name with several meanings, the obvious ones are texture or form, different from the normal i.e. skew whiff, a provocative slang word and the not so obvious, is that its a place name of a region in Japan. Each one conjures up its unique talking point and just like Richard Branson’s brand Virgin it stands out from its competitors although being the upmost professional in its market place Kinki Boutique don’t take themselves too seriously.
“The last thing i wanted to do was to stick my name above the door as i wanted to be part of a team and not steal away the limelight from my staff. I want us to shine together” said Jason.
Kinki Is all about being different. (Not just another haircut, Not just another salon), in a market saturated by hair salons, our aim is to provide top quality services in an environment that relaxes yet stimulates our clients and staff so that together we can create mini miracles.
Our decor has been designed from the bare bricks and mortar upwards by ourselves since spending several hundred thousand on our unique appearance.
A tall sloping glass shop front was our most important feature which adds length and grandeur to a relatively narrow retail unit.
The glass starts from way above the shop front and angles inwards at a 6 degree angle. Sitting on more glass that rests on the floor, sunken spot lights shine with light adding further length and drama especially at night.
The same degree angles have been used in a unique sloping mirrored wall upstairs and again the angles continue on the reseeding mirrored reception and coffee bar along with the glass partition walls around the salon.
A blacked out shampoo and treatment area is separated by a thin black threaded curtain.
One and a half kilometres of fibre optic cabling went into the feature ceiling which twinkles gold, yellow and white as you lay back on our full back and leg massage chairs.
If you look up you’ll also see our giant black crystal cut glass chandeliers on either floor.
Black glass, hidden away sliding cupboards and positions with tvs playing fashion channels make you stay a pleasure for the senses.
The shiny black glass, mirrors and black granite floors have been inspired by fashion boutiques such as Versace, Yves Saint Laurent etc that i spent time working next to in Bond Street London and had also visited in Beverly hills Rodeo Drive in los Angeles.
French Louis chic ornate chairs and picture frames add a touch of theatre to the setting and our workspace.
The juxtaposition of the old and the new and the linear lines mixed with organic shapes i’ve always liked and its become very in Vogue since i used it on my first ever salon way back in 95 although its evolved with each of the four salons that i’ve designed and owned.
Ive finally been able to open a city centre high street salon that ive always aspired too and in a great location surrounded shops like Paperchase, Karen Millen, White Stuff and Laura Ashley. We have a great team and atmosphere at Kinki Boutique and now having all our various experiences makes us not just wanting to succeed but to be and continue to be the best salon in this part of England.
Its almost like coming full circle as this is the type of salon i started my training in way back in London.
Music is very dear to us and we play an eclectic mix indeed. From quirky new and underground tunes to classic or rare sounds of yesteryears. We realy do play it all in our cool mixs of the best sounds around. You can even bring your Ipod and link it into one of our terminals that we have on either floor so that you can introduce us to your taste.
We strive to keep as competitively priced as possible and we have at least an hour to spend on creating and understanding our clients needs and aspirations with their hair.
We also give a massive 20% discount for students, six formers and children under Sixteen so as to continually encourage young blood into the salon and so keeping new ideas and our creative juices flowing.
Although very serious about our quality control we like to encourage our staff and our clients to have fun and to be relaxed so as to enjoy their experience as much as possible.
